The Julian Alps

Slovenia's high country — limestone walls, glacier-fed lakes, and the country's only national park, all within a two-hour drive of Ljubljana.

The Julian Alps are the kind of range that rewards preparation and punishes the rushed. Triglav, the country's highest peak, sits at the centre of the only national park in Slovenia, and the trails that thread up to it are some of the most carefully maintained — and most underestimated — in the Alps. Via ferratas are common above 2,000 m; weather changes hourly; mountain huts are the only shelter once you're above the treeline.

Tours in this region are written by guides who run these routes every season. Each tour ships with the safety calls — where to turn back, where to wait out a storm, which hut staff to ask for — that make the difference between summiting and surviving.
